Anti-riot police have deployed heavily at Kyambogo University following reports of a looming students’ strike.
Students were on Monday demanding for the release of a fellow student
who was arrested for allegedly masterminding the strike. They wanted
their colleague released.
The development follows a two-day lecturers’ strike which started on
Friday. The lecturers were demanding for the resignation of the Vice
Chancellor Prof. Isaiah Ndiege.
The lecturers’ strike was called off over the weekend. Lectures were
meant to resume today (Monday) but message calling off the strike was
sent late on Sunday night. Lectures have not been conducted.
The university council has issued a one-week notice to the Vice
Chancellor Ndiege to step aside to pave way for investigations over
mismanagement allegations.
Other top officers asked to step aside include: the University Secretary
Sam Okorimo, Academic Registrar Rose Bwire, Dean of students Winfred
Buga, Dean of arts and social science Cyprian Adupa and Dean of
engineering Daudi Mugisha.
